How to read sheet music, hearing every note
Reading sheet music means finding out two things about every note: which pitch it sounds and how long it lasts. Pitch comes from position — the higher the notehead sits on the five lines of the staff, the higher the sound — and it is the clef, at the very start of the line, that gives each line and space its name. Everything else is counted from there, one step at a time. Below, each of those ideas is a toy: drag it, hear it, and watch the name change before you read a word about it.

The staff: five lines where pitch lives
Drag the note up and down and listen: the higher it sits, the higher it sounds. That is the rule holding up the whole page — the vertical position of the notehead is the pitch you hear. The five lines and the four spaces between them are the map of that climb.
One step up means going from a line to the space right above it, and from that space to the next line. Line, space, line, space: every step is the neighbouring note. On paper every step looks the same size; in sound it is not — and that is what the accidentals section is about.
A staff is always counted from the bottom up: the first line is the lowest one, not the top one.
The clef: what gives the lines their names
Swap the clef and watch what happens: the dot has not moved, but its name and its pitch both changed. Without a clef the staff is just a drawing of lines — it shows you where a pitch sits, not which pitch it is.
The treble clef curls its spiral around the second line and declares: this one is G. The bass clef puts its two dots either side of the fourth line and declares: this one is F. Given one of those anchors, every other note is counted from it, step by step. That is also why the treble clef is called the G clef and the bass clef the F clef.
The clef is the first thing on the line and it holds until another one appears. Reading without checking the clef is reading the map of a different city.
The seven notes — and the seven colours
In English the notes are letters: C, D, E, F, G, A, B — and then it starts over at C. Each step on the staff is the next letter in that ring of seven, so a line and the space right above it are neighbours. When C comes round again it sounds higher: the same note, one octave up, which is why seven letters cover the whole keyboard. Most of the world sings those same seven as do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si — same notes, different labels, and you will meet them the moment you open a method book from Italy, France, Spain or Brazil.
Turn the colours on and the seven notes take the palette you already know from colour-coded tubes and toy xylophones: one colour per name, always the same one. It is the shortest bridge between reading nothing at all and knowing where that note lives — and it really is a bridge: real sheet music is black. The colour is not the note, it is a hint about it. Switch the colours off now and then and see how much you already read without them.
Ledger lines: the staff does not stop at five lines
Keep pushing the note above the top line and a short stub of line appears just for it. That is a ledger line: one extra step, drawn on the spot and only as wide as the note, so the staff never needs twenty fixed lines that would almost never be used.
The same thing happens below the staff, and the first step down there has a name of its own: middle C, the note that sits right in the middle of the piano. Notice where it lives — the whole next section depends on it.
Ledger lines are counted one by one, as if the staff carried on: the second one above the top line is the second step past it.
Two hands: treble clef and bass clef
Piano music uses two staves at once, joined by a brace: treble clef on top, usually the right hand; bass clef underneath, usually the left. They are not two different systems — it is the same map, carried on downwards.
What stitches them together is middle C. It is the first ledger line below the upper staff and the first ledger line above the lower one: the same note, written two ways. Once that seam makes sense, the bass clef stops being a second alphabet to memorise.
If the bass clef feels scrambled, find middle C first and count from there — at the start, that is how everyone reads it.
Sharps, flats and the key signature
Turn the sharp on and listen: the note went up a semitone, the smallest distance in the system — but it is still on the same line and still has the same letter name. The flat does the opposite, down a semitone. The natural sign cancels both and hands the note back plain.
When the same accidentals apply to a whole piece, nobody repeats them on every note: they are written once, right after the clef, and that handful of signs is the key signature. One sign there applies to the note's LETTER NAME — every F in the piece, low and high, not just the F on that line — from the first bar to the last, until the music says otherwise.
On the piano a semitone is the key immediately next door — starting from a white key it is usually a black one, but not always: there is no black key between E and F, or between B and C.
Reading is playing: the score moves and sounds
Put it all together: position became pitch, the clef handed out the names, and now the phrase travels under the cursor and sounds. That is what reading music actually is — the page turning into sound at the speed you move through it. Nothing here is scored or marked: it is just so you can hear, in one go, the link between what is written and what comes out.

Reading music is not learned by memorising a table: it is learned by seeing the note, naming it and hearing straight away whether that was the one — many times over, in short sittings.
